  • Saudi Arabia Embassy, Sarajevo / Bosnia & Herzegovina by rab architects“ Architecture Lab

Our 3rd prize winning project on architecture lab!

    http://architecturelab.net/saudi-arabia-embassy-sarajevo-bosnia-herzegovina-by-rab-architects/

This acclaimed concept for a Saudi Arabian embassy reflects a contemporary Islamic aesthetic, whilst being inspired by the rich natural context of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Enchantingly protruding out of its natural context, the design draws volumetric inspiration from the mysterious pyramids of the Visoko Valley and Dinaric Mountains surrounding the city.

This competition entry aimed to distil the cultural heritage of Saudi Arabia and interpret its Islamic character with a contemporary and functional design, whilst considering the appropriateness of the proposal within the host country.

The spatial programming evolved by critically understanding the specific schedule of accommodation set out by the competition, and a contemporary Moucharabya becomes an adaptable element increasing privacy and security to the design.

The landmark proposal is designed boldly to reflect the growing ties between Saudi Arabia and the host country, and enchants its visitors with its interplay of shadows and light across a dynamic backdrop of form and space.

  • A shortlisted proposal for the Lebanese Pavilion in Venice Architecture Biennale 2020 by rab architects

Alternate Patterns is rabarchitects' shortlisted proposal for the Lebanese Pavilion in Venice Architecture Biennale 2020.

The Biennale was curated by Lebanese architect Hashim Sarkis under the theme: 'How Will We Live Together?'

The Lebanese Pavilion curators were selected through a competition organized by the Order of Engineers and Architects in Lebanon and the Ministry of Culture.

rab architects' proposal deals with Beirut's public spaces and heterotopia along with individuality and technology.

Alternate Patterns is an experiential installation that takes the visitor from self-reflection and individualism to self-realization and community collectivism. It revolves around the themes of re-connection and re-materialization of what we have lost in the modern age; where we as individuals have become disconnected from each other and our environment.

"WK apartment is located on the last floor of MV building. This allowed us to light up the space through carefully placed skylights, creating a game of shadow and light throughout the day. The wooden and steel shelving system was designed to cover the structural wall of the core while providing the client with display shelves. The shelves pass through the slab of the second floor, linking the first and second levels of the apartment. The common areas are characterized by the open floor plan, which allowed for a flow in the space, as well as increased light. The partition between the kitchen and dining room allows for a fun visual relationship. The interplay between etched and clear glass allows for a play of transparency between private and semi-private spaces. The communal space design of WK apartment allows for an uninterrupted view of Monteverde’s pine trees forests. The interplay between concrete and nature allows a balance in the space."
