Overview

Inspired by the port area of Beirut it overlooks, the design of this 13-storey residential development attempts to distil a contemporary aesthetic and experience of space from its context.

Location

Located along Armenia Street in Mar Mikhail, an area with distinct cultural character in Beirut, the immediate site is characterized by a harmonious chaos of historic and contemporary aesthetics and forms.

Perspectives

The existing structure was retained as a critical element in the sensitivity of the design and its appropriateness to its context, with its stone arched ground level renovated and restored to house contemporary functions.

Concept

This contemporary design of stacked apartment volumes, inspired by stacking large shipping containers is sensitive to its own scale along the street, and was designed to capitalize on its vista towards the Beirut port whilst being set back from imposing itself along the street boundary.

Diagrams

Whilst it stands boldly in its context, its protruding box frame façade flirts with the ad hoc geometry of its neighboring buildings and assimilates within them, and into a landscape rich of culture and history.
